Understanding and Addressing Gender Bias in Australian Healthcare

A 2024 Australian Government report on gender bias in healthcare presents a stark overview on the gender bias that persists in healthcare. Conducted by the National Women’s Health Advisory Council, the #EndGenderBias survey collected responses from Australian women, health professionals, researchers, and consumer advocates about their experiences with gender bias and barriers within the health system. 1

  • 70% of women experienced bias in diagnosis and treatment of health conditions
  • 72% of women experienced bias in GP visits
  • ~50% of women reported bias in hospital settings
  • 70% of expert stakeholders believed women were often not taken seriously, or believed regarding a health issue
  • 62% of women found healthcare unaffordable, and 45% found it inaccessible
